Less is More

If you know me, you know I really don’t like clutter, and I’m obsessed with organizing. Sometimes I procrastinate on my homework – or sleep! – just because I can’t stop organizing and tidying things up. I follow all the organization and minimalist blogs I can find (a few of my favorites are on listed on the right). I’ll freely admit that this could be a problem, and I may need an intervention at some point in my life.

So, when I saw GET RID OF STUFF 2015, I dropped everything and started getting rid of stuff myself.

I’ve been wearing a lot of the same clothes since I was in middle school (because I’m basically as short as a middle schooler), and I had been hoarding old school papers and notebooks along with other random things that I didn’t even remember I had – some of which were extremely embarrassing, including my attempts to draw people. I won’t be sharing those.

I found shoes that I hadn’t worn in years or didn’t even like, old “backup” phones because I was always afraid my phone was going to break again, and stashes of things in my purses. Just try to picture the clutter all of this created both in my closet and in my head, especially when I tried to get ready in the mornings.

So, I took over an hour on Friday to purge my closet. I ended up with mountains of things in the floor and even more in the trash.

Exhibit A (this isn’t even all of it):
There’s even a Limited Too coat and a freshman year class notebook somewhere in there.Obviously, it had been way too long since I had really gotten rid of anything. I picked out a few things here and there that I didn’t want, but I hadn’t gone throw-everything-out crazy in quite a while.

Once I made the world’s biggest mess (because usually things get worse before they get better), I threw away the things, mostly papers, that were of no use to anyone, and started folding clothes to put in bags for donation. It was a relief to get the mess out of my floor.

Here’s what I ended up with:

I filled up five big bags with clothes and shoes that I hadn’t worn in a year or didn’t like. Great feeling!

Before and after on both sides of my closet:

This side was my biggest accomplishment

My closet is so much easier to navigate, and it’s not quite as packed. I still have more than I need, but I think this will be a long process of continual purging.

I’ve gotten the most cluttered spot out of the way. Next stop: bathroom cabinets and makeup
